Best Hikes in Ella, Sri Lanka

When traveling to other countries, my top destinations are either the beach or the mountains. After enjoying the waves in Hikkaduwa, our next destination was the mountainous region of Sri Lanka. Situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Ella is a quaint town in the Badulla District of the Uva Province. Let’s go!

How to go to Ella, Sri Lanka

Our initial plan involves traveling from Hikkaduwa to Galle to catch a bus to Ella. Although it's just a short 30-minute journey from Hikkaduwa, we are uncertain if there's a direct bus to Ella from there. A tuk-tuk ride was quoted at around 1,500 rupees for a 20-30-minute trip, which is considerably more expensive than our previous bus journey from Colombo to Hikkaduwa for only 200 rupees, taking about 3 hours. To navigate more cost-effectively, we decided to head to Hikkaduwa Bus Terminal, a brief 10-minute drive from our hotel, and then take a bus to Matara Bus Station. From Matara, we would board another bus to Ella, as this route was confirmed to be accurate. This journey would occupy most of our day according to our schedule, so it's crucial to ensure we stay on the right path.

Where to Stay in Ella

Upon our arrival in Ella in the late afternoon, we couldn't locate our guesthouse. After seeking directions from a local in Sri Lanka, who couldn't spot it either, he kindly offered his own guesthouse. Situated conveniently on the roadside next to a massage parlor, just a short walk from the train station and Chili's restaurant. Across the street, you'll find the Ice Cube Bar and several other shops and eateries along the road. Additionally, the route to Adams Peak and Ella's Rock is nearby. We promptly canceled our online guesthouse reservation and accepted his generous offer.

Hiking Plan Route

  • 01 Aug Mon - Ella
  • Sunrise in Little Adam's Peak
  • Hike Ella's Rock
  • Check out Nine Arch Bridge
  • Sri Lanka Massage

Little Adam’s Peak
  • Hiking time: two hours (round trip)
  • 5:30 Am - 9:30 Am

Waking up early that morning was not early enough to catch the sunrise. The extensive travel hours were beginning to wear us down, and the lack of sleep left us feeling exhausted and quiet. This is a common challenge with time-limited journeys; the physical energy is present, but our minds drift aimlessly. Dealing with sleep deprivation while backpacking is a rite of passage, and this is where your travel companion becomes invaluable. Supporting each other with laughter, a reassuring pat on the back, a smile, a nod, or simply the comfort of knowing you are not alone in this experience. When traveling solo, relying on positive thoughts, absorbing the energy of your surroundings, and connecting with nature can be uplifting. Perhaps this is why I gravitate towards nature when embarking on solo adventures.

How to go to Little Adam's Peak Trail, Sri Lanka

Little Adam's Peak stands around 1141 meters above sea level. A short, easy hike for everybody. There are no precise signs heading to Little Adam's Peak either you follow other hikers, ask a local, or get a guide. All advice was followed but instead of hiring a local guide, we took a guide map to make sure we were on the track. If you're in doubt about the route ask any local passing by the road. We were also a bit lucky that day because we found a few climbers. Little Adam's Peak is also known as Mini Adam's Peak, next to 98 Acres Resort and the right side of the White Buddha.

The hike to Adams Peak typically lasts an hour, encompassing flat paths and challenging stair climbs before reaching the peak. It's a fantastic workout to invigorate tired muscles, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the true beauty of Sri Lanka. Although we missed the sunrise, the journey to the summit was truly rewarding. From the other side of the mountain, we had a clear view of Ella's Rock. Enjoying an apple for breakfast while gazing at the mountainous scenery, sipping on salty sweat, and feeling content with a successful hike.

Starting point: Get to Ella's town

The police stop post or checkpoint is where the hike begins. You can double-check your route with the friendly policemen in the post.

The hike to Adams Peak would take an hour which includes flat roads and straining stairs climbing before reaching the summit.

Pass by the tea plantation. Keep walking straight and follow the dirt road.

A great exercise to wake up those tired muscles, smell the fresh air and see the real beauty of Sri Lanka.

Once you have reached the summit keep walking and follow the road less traveled for more breathtaking views.

Worth it!

Though we didn't make it for the sunrise the hike up the peak was all worth it. Ella's rock was in view just right in front of us on the other side of the mountain. We had an apple for breakfast with the breathtaking view of the mountains, salty sweat for our drink, and a happy heart for a hike well done.

Second Stop: Ella's Rock Trail

Descending was a breeze, and we made it just in time for brunch. I ensured that we sampled various authentic Sri Lankan dishes at each place we visited. This time, we had the opportunity to taste the renowned Sri Lankan Curd drink, which I absolutely enjoyed. It's a creamy beverage with a delightful sweet and aromatic finish with every sip. We also tried some Spicy Sri Lankan Fried Rice and Sri Lankan Noodles.

Our next destination was Ella's Rock, and surprisingly, the amiable owner of our guesthouse decided to join us. We hopped on a train from Ella to a nearby town (I think it was Badulla) just one stop away. Initially, our plan was to hike from the railway station to Ella's Rock, but we ended up taking the train. Accompanied by a local, we thought everything would be fine. Interestingly, it turned out to be his first time hiking to Ella's Rock, explaining his eagerness to join us. He had recently relocated his business from Colombo to Ella. Despite our initial concerns, we eventually reached the train tracks, which our research indicated was the correct route to Ella's Rock. We encountered a few other hikers on the path as well.

  • Hiking Time: 4 hours (roundtrip)
  • 10:50 Am - 2:00 Pm

Ella's Rock is situated approximately 1150 meters above sea level. You have the option to hire a local guide for 1,500 rupees or around 12 USD per person, or you can choose to navigate the hike on your own. While there isn't a specific trail leading to the summit, there are reports of both an easy and a more challenging path. It seems we unknowingly took the latter, as we didn't encounter any paved roads like the other trail was said to have. The hike proved to be quite demanding compared to Little Adam's Peak, with our new acquaintance struggling to keep up, prompting us to take several breaks.

Took train from Ella to a nearby town

Next, we headed to Ella's Rock, accompanied by the welcoming owner of our guesthouse. We boarded a train from Ella to a nearby town, possibly Badulla, just one stop away. Despite our initial plan to hike from the railway station to Ella's Rock as suggested in our research, we ended up taking the train, joined by a local – what could possibly go wrong, right? Interestingly, it was his first time venturing to Ella's Rock, explaining his eagerness to hike with us. Originally from Colombo, he had recently started his business in Ella. Although slightly concerned, we eventually found our way to the train tracks, as indicated in our research as the correct route to Ella's Rock, with a few other climbers trekking alongside us. The trail commences along the railway lines, winding through tea plantations before ascending the hills towards Ella's Rock.

Follow the train tracks

Careful with the passing train. I saw a slipper along the railway and thought to myself where could the other missing pair be, ahahaa. Don't miss the turn to Ella's Rock,  it's a small road alongside the railway line.

If you find this steel bridge then you're on the right track. Pass by tea plantations.

Pass through a small cornfield.

Hike up with the rubber trees. Take good care of your knees and ankles as you climb the root stairs ahead.

Great Job! You've reached Ella's Rock. On top, a guy is selling bottled water, a few snacks, and even a cup of tea if you want to hang around for a while.

The Summit

The edge of the summit may not appear intimidating in photos, but let me tell you, standing there was quite a challenge. One wrong step, a burst of laughter, and you could find yourself in a perilous situation. Descending from the mountain is quicker, but always be cautious of your footing to prevent any mishaps. After the strenuous hike under the scorching sun, it was essential to retreat to the guesthouse for some relaxation. Treating ourselves to a bottle of Coca-Cola, an ice-cream drumstick, and a quick power nap was the perfect rejuvenating break. By 4 p.m., we were ready to hit the trails once again.

Third Stop: Nine Arch Bridge Trail

  • Nine Arch Bridge
  • Hiking Time: 1 hour (roundtrip)

The final hike of the day took us to the renowned Nine Arch Bridge in Sri Lanka, nestled between Ella and Demodara railway stations. The trek to the bridge was brief, akin to a leisurely stroll in a mall, and notably, no signs were directing us there. Instead, we relied on our charm and bright smiles to elicit guidance from the locals. Our reliance on phone trail maps, GPS, and online searches has minimized our interactions with the world around us. We've forgotten the thrill of getting lost, seeking directions from strangers, and the joy of discovering our destination. I still hold onto my adventurous, nature-loving spirit to inquire, explore, and embrace the present moment. Perhaps that's why I resist the temptation to purchase or rent a portable Wi-Fi device when traveling. It's not about intentionally losing my way; disconnecting from the online realm is truly freeing. While some may find this unconventional, it's an experience worth trying for yourself.

A famous bridge in Sri Lanka is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. It was a short hike to the bridge, like a stroll in the mall and of course, no signs were going to the bridge. You just have to show your charisma and your pearly white teeth to the locals to show you the way.

Take your charisma out of your pocket, show your pearly white teeth, and ask a local for directions.

Guess which road to take?!  It's very confusing, so always ask a local around if not then take it this way as it's how we made it alive.

Careful

Once you find a house with long 6 long posts built as its foundation on the cliff side of the road just keep walking straight and pray for their safety. The next house you will find will seem like a dead end because there will be no more flat roads for the trail. Don't panic you are on the right track. The only way around is to get down. There will be root stairs guiding you down, carefully keep walking down, walk straight, and eventually, you will find the Nine Arch Bridge.

Finally made it!

The Nine Arch Bridge looked nostalgic with its ash color and location. The massive bridge is built entirely with solid rocks, bricks, and cement without using a single piece of steel in its structure. An amazing piece of art standing in the mountain area of Sri Lanka. We were lucky as usual the train was scheduled to arrive at that time maybe that was around 5 or 5:30 in the afternoon. The blue train honked its horn, as locals and tourists smiled and waved goodbye at each other.

We ended the day with a sumptuous Sri Lankan fried rice and noodles. Top it up with a Sri Lankan Massage before bedtime, this time around I ask the attendant to press harder but I guess they're just really gentle people with fluid hands.

The most scenic train ride ever!

  • 02 Aug Tue Ella to Colombo
  • Ella to Colombo Fort by Morning Train (6:50 Am)
  • Train Fare: 400 Rupees

Ella to Colombo Fort

We took the famous scenic train back to Colombo. The spectacular scenery runs from Ella and Kandy. This is considered one of Asia's most beautiful train trips or even the world. Imagine yourself inside a train on top of a mountain railway overlooking a sea of tea plantations that goes from one mountain to another. Shades of green, yellow, and brown fill all the empty space that draws to the beauty of nature.
